Overview
Nigel Roberts, BChir, MB, MD, FACMQ
Charged with defining and promoting a system to educate and credential quality management professionals, the American College of Medical Quality's Education Commission launched the ACMQ Distinguished Fellow Program with the 1992 Seminar Series. Responding to the perceived need within the growing administrative specialty for accredited training, ACMQ's objectives were three-fold:

  • To apprise clinicians of changes in the fields of quality, utilization and risk management;
  • To facilitate an understanding of these changes; and
  • To assist physicians and other health professionals in the development or transition to a career in administrative medicine.

This unique course of study is for physicians and health care professionals seeking a credential in the administrative specialty of quality management. The program is based in concept on the work of Dr. Avedis Donabedian and embraces the mission of ACMQ — emphasizing education and accredited training in a distinct core body of knowledge.

In practice and life experiences, most physicians and health professionals focus on one or two areas of expertise. The objective of the ACMQ Credentialing Program is to assure that candidates take a more thorough approach and are educated in all facets of the specialty. AMCQ's Education Commission has categorized this distinct or "core" body of knowledge into six generic areas. The six core categories are:

  • Quality Management
  • Organization Design and Management
  • Utilization Management
  • Economics, Finance and Government
  • Information Systems
  • Legal and Ethical Issues

ACMQ has based its credentialing program on the generally accepted standards of the medical specialty societies, requiring 150 accredited hours over a three-year period. To accomplish this goal, the program requires a blend of CME Category 1 hours or CEUs, life experience, and informal study from the six major discipline areas above. A maximum of 20 hours will be awarded for life experience, 50 hours for a residency program, and up to 30 hours for preceptorships. Please note that your 150 hours may be accumulated during any continuous three-year period starting from the ACMQ session in September 1990. To maintain the credential, a professional must accumulate 50 hours of CMEs/CEUs over a three-year period. Completion of all parts results in the awarding of an educational credential and certificate from ACMQ.

All candidates must be members of the American College of Medical Quality.

Note: It is important that you complete the distinguished fellowship application in full and provide a hard copy and backup material for all activities listed.
